Back Story

This was perhaps the first serious attempt I made at a video production. I was a big Pee Wee Herman fan at the time. I was inspired by the stage production I had seen on HBO, particularly by the way he opened with just going through his toys and making jokes about them. This was my attempt to take a stab at it myself. But whereas Pee Wee's humor was heavily veiled, my take was overtly directed at adults.

The target audience for this piece was my fraternity brothers. I had been living with one for the previous year and a half. His nickname was "Pud", and it was no picnic sharing an apartment with him. Shortly before I moved out I captured some of his mess in photographs.

Another one of my fraternity brothers was living in the area, and he helped me out with this video. He was a bit of an odd duck, so we used that in his character. He had no love for the guy we were poking fun at and was happy to play along.

This video stands okay-ish on its own. I was getting better at editing by dubbing from one VCR to another, and the cuts were somewhat smoother. But the content can't really resonate with general audiences. It was based on inside jokes that only people in the fraternity would get. However it's interesting for me to see myself at this early stage of my development as a performer and producer of art videos. I was beginning to show a knack for playing characters, but I still had a long way to go in terms of crafting jokes and using my physicality. In the end it was a relatively significant step in my journey.
